Looking for support? Report Breastfeeding Discrimination

FirstRight is a national grassroots breastfeeding advocacy group committed to ensuring freedom from discrimination for breastfeeding children and their mothers. The recent outpouring of activism and support for women and children who have experienced discrimination has shown that people are passionate about defending the rights of breastfeeding mothers and children. Channeling that passion into positive, professional, and productive action is the purpose of FirstRight.

FirstRight has already begun work on action items that can be conducted by individuals from the comfort of their own homes, as well as larger-scale projects. We’d like to provide a place for individuals to connect with local and national activists to create a passionate and powerful group. We’d love for you to be involved in continuing the important work of breastfeeding advocacy. If you would like to join any or all of these committees, please follow the links and let us know your ideas!

Our Core Values:

  • Breastfeeding is a normal, natural, healthy part of skilled and loving parenting.
  • Children have the right to breastfeed in public or private without being subjected to interference, discriminatory actions, or having their mothers harassed.
  • Women with children are essential to a healthy culture, which necessitates their integration into public life; they should not be sequestered while feeding and nurturing their children.

Action Plan: To address FirstRight’s goals of finding and supporting breastfeeding mothers who have faced discrimination, educating corporations and the public about breastfeeding rights, and facilitating legislative change when indicated, FirstRight has formed three committees.

FirstRight’s Breastfeeding Discrimination Task Force will collect and respond to cases of discrimination, assisting or advocating for the mother as needed, and organizing national events when appropriate.

FirstRight’s Breastfeeding Rights Education Committee will work to spread the word among individuals and businesses about existing breastfeeding rights. We encourage businesses to adopt breastfeeding policies/practices and assist them in doing so.

FirstRight’s Breastfeeding Legislative Action Committee is working to determine the current status of state and national breastfeeding legislation in order to encourage/support efforts to improve legal protection for breastfeeding mothers.
